Measuring ring size without a ring sizer

Measuring ring size without a ring sizer

Measuring ring size without a ring sizer The most reliable at-home method is to measure a ring that fits well on the same finger. Measure the inside diameter in millimeters, excluding the edge, and compare it with the product's sizing. If you don't have a suitable ring, measure your finger circumference with a narrow strip of paper. Always repeat the measurement.

Method 1: Measure a well-fitting ring

Lay the ring flat on a ruler with a millimeter scale. Measure the greatest distance on the inside, from edge to edge. The metal edge should not be included. Measure two or three times and record the inside diameter as precisely as possible.

Only use a ring that fits comfortably on the finger for which you are looking for a new model. The size of the left and right hand can differ, and even fingers on the same hand do not have the same circumference.

Method 2: Measure finger circumference

Wrap a narrow strip of paper loosely around where the ring will sit. Mark the point where the strip overlaps, lay it flat, and measure the length in millimeters. Ensure the paper can pass over the knuckle and does not press tightly into the skin.

Thread or elastic material can stretch and therefore more easily give an incorrect result. Paper that is too wide behaves differently from a ring. A narrow, non-stretchy strip works most clearly.

When is the best time to measure?

Fingers can vary slightly throughout the day due to temperature and moisture. Therefore, do not measure immediately after intense exercise or when your hands are exceptionally cold or warm. A measurement later in the day at a normal room temperature provides a useful starting point.

Repeat the measurement at two different times. If the results are close to each other, you have more certainty. If you are between two available sizes, look at the model and the product-specific sizing information.

Open, adjustable or fixed model

An open or adjustable design can provide some leeway, but you should not assume that every ring is infinitely adjustable. Check this explicitly on the product page and do not force the material.

Frequently asked questions

Do you measure the inside or outside of a ring?

Measure the inside diameter. The thickness of the metal edge is not part of the space for your finger.

Can every adjustable ring be made to fit?

No. The possible adjustment varies by design and material. Check the product information and do not bend a ring unnecessarily.

Are my left and right ring fingers the same size?

Not always. Measure precisely the finger and hand on which you want to wear the new ring.
